Chase the Northern Lights in Rovaniemi, the heart of Finnish Lapland. Just beyond the city lights lies a world of snow-covered forests and frozen lakes, perfect backdrops for the Aurora Borealis. Guided tours from Rovaniemi make it easy to head into the wilderness, where clear Arctic skies set the stage for nature’s most breathtaking light show.

Overview

  • Average distance travelled from Rovaniemi: 20–80 km (depending on cloud cover and aurora visibility)
  • Typical travel time: 30–60 minutes one way
  • Average duration: 3–5 hours
  • Best season/time of year: Late August to early April, with peak visibility from November to February
  • Common meeting/drop-off points: Central Rovaniemi hotels, Santa Claus Village, or designated pickup locations within the city

Things to know before booking your Rovaniemi Northern Lights tour

  • Book early: Northern Lights tours in Rovaniemi fill up quickly between November and March. Reserve 2–4 weeks ahead in peak season to secure your preferred date and tour type, especially for small-group or combo experiences.
  • Choose your experience type: From minibus aurora chases to Northern Lights snowmobile safaris and reindeer sleigh rides under the stars, Rovaniemi offers every way to spot the lights. Minibus tours maximize range, while animal-powered rides focus on atmosphere and tradition.
  • Duration & timings: Most tours last 3–4 hours, departing after 7pm when skies are darkest. Extended safaris or combo tours may run up to 6 hours, often including warm drinks and campfire breaks.
  • Transport options: Most tours include hotel pickup and drop-off within central Rovaniemi. Small-group minibus tours cover longer distances to chase clear skies, while snowmobile and sleigh tours depart from nearby wilderness bases just outside the city.
  • Warmth & comfort: Thermal overalls, boots, gloves, and helmets are typically included in all outdoor tours. You’ll still want to wear extra layers underneath, especially in December–February when temperatures can drop below –20 °C.
  • Aurora sightings depend on the weather: The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon. If the skies are cloudy, tours may reschedule or offer a free re-try on another night. Some premium tours include backup indoor activities like aurora photography workshops.
  • Add-on activities available: Upgrade to private photography sessions, snowshoe walks, or traditional Finnish BBQ dinners at wilderness camps. These add-ons make the night longer but far more immersive.
  • Age limits: Family-friendly options welcome children aged 4+, while snowmobile safaris generally require drivers to be 18+ with a valid license. Check each listing for specific age or height restrictions.

Frequently asked questions about Rovaniemi Northern Lights tours

Do I need to book my Northern Lights tour in advance?

Yes. The aurora season (September–April) is peak travel time in Lapland. Booking 2–4 weeks in advance ensures your spot on your preferred date, especially for small-group or combo tours.

Can I see the Northern Lights without a tour?

Yes, Rovaniemi has several accessible viewing spots such as Ounasvaara Hill, Arktikum Beach, and Pöyliöjärvi Lake. However, guided tours drive you farther from city lights, increasing your chances of witnessing a clear, bright display with real-time updates from aurora trackers.

What happens if I don’t see the Northern Lights?

Many operators offer a “free rebooking” or “try again” policy if no aurora appears due to cloudy conditions. Others may extend the tour or move to a clearer location to maximize your chances.

Are meals provided during the tour?

Meals are generally not included, but hot drinks and light snacks are often served during stops. Combo tours involving reindeer or husky farms may include a traditional Lapland meal or campfire barbecue experience.

Where do tours start from?

Most tours include hotel pickup and drop-off from Rovaniemi city center or meet at designated pickup points near the Arctic Circle. Always arrive 10–15 minutes early to ensure a smooth departure.

Overall, the trip was decent. The highlight was our photographer, Gisel, who was incredibly patient and professional. Despite the freezing cold, she took her time, guided us through the process, and ensured we got amazing Northern Lights pictures. However, our experience with the guide ( who was our driver too) was disappointing. She was inattentive, barely answered our questions, and seemed more interested in entertaining another group. Our package included Finnish storytelling, but unfortunately, she did not share any of it with us. In short, while the photography experience was exceptional, the guiding service fell short of expectations.

Michael / Mikhail was super friendly and super knowledgeable. I get super cold super fast, he was kind enough to get me the right outfit, kind enough check in throughout the thing, warm enough? Fast enough etc. We only saw a mild bit of aurora but the experience is still worth it. Standing in the middle of a frozen lake in the cold and looking up at the cosmos.
